Proactive person-centred treatment
I’m Dr Claire Arthur.
For over 10 years, I’ve worked as a clinical oncologist specialising in treating rectal cancer with radiotherapy. As well as my work for the NHS, I also offer consultations privately at The Christie Private Care.
Radiotherapy is a very effective cancer treatment and can, in some circumstances, avoid the need to undergo surgery.
I’m an experienced clinician in my field, working in one of Europe's largest cancer centres. Having been involved in clinical trials, I know the latest treatment options available and can help you make the treatment decision that’s best for you.
I’m part of your treatment team
I don’t give chemotherapy or operate.
But I will work with your wider treatment team which will include your surgeon, chemotherapy oncologist, specialist nurse and GP. We’ll co-ordinate our input and treatments, to deliver the right treatment for you.
And you’re an important part of the team, too.
I treat the person, not the patient
Navigating a cancer diagnosis is difficult and everyone’s circumstances are different.
There are many treatment options available.
So, as well as studying your results to pin down what treatment options are available to you, I’ll work with you to understand your situation and what’s important to you.
I provide personalised treatment plans that suit your circumstances. You can trust me to acknowledge the challenges ahead but provide you with clear information and a proactive plan of action. Together, we’ll come to a decision about the best treatment plan for you.
Assessing your response to treatment is not only about how the cancer responds but about you and any physical or psychological impact of treatment.
I work at the forefront of medical advances
I work with a team of radiographers to deliver your radiotherapy treatment. Using modern radiotherapy techniques enables us to accurately target the tumour whilst reducing the exposure to normal tissues. That’s good news because it can reduce the initial and long-term side effects.
Do you need a second opinion?
You may already have a treatment plan for your rectal cancer and would like a second opinion.
I can offer you a fresh perspective about the role of radiotherapy in your treatment, to help you make a decision about your treatment.
We can discuss your diagnosis and treatment options you’ve been recommended.
I offer consultations at The Christie Private Care, Manchester, in person or via video link.
Ahead of our consultation, I’ll need copies of recent medical letters, biopsy and scan results as well as copies of your scan images. My team will liaise with you to ensure I have the information I need before your consultation.
Are you a colorectal surgeon referring a patient for consideration of radiotherapy?
I work with colorectal surgeons in multiple colorectal MDTs, offering expert clinical oncology advice on the role of radiotherapy for rectal cancer.
